Meet the Trainer: Judy Granberg, CPDT

  Judy Granberg

My love of dogs has spanned over 40 years, beginning with my first mixed breed puppy, Apache, a gift from my dad for my 12th birthday. In 1960, I enrolled Apache in the St. Francis Dog Training Club’s Beginner’s Class. From those classes, I learned the joys of owning a well-trained dog. Through the ‘60s and ‘70s, I had the good fortune to train with and learn from many highly respected dog trainers. Obedience classes were based on the “military” style of dog training; i.e., the dog learned to heel, sit, down, stay and come on command. Emphasis was on teaching the dog to “obey” commands. Methods used were deemed too harsh for puppies. Owners could not enroll their puppies in training classes until the puppies were six months old.

In 1998, I attended my first Association of Pet Dog Trainers [APDT] Conference and discovered a paradigm shift in the training of dogs, especially pet dogs. Strict obedience using punishment-based methods was no longer acceptable. The APDT encouraged the use of dog friendly techniques and reward-based training which meant owners could start the lifelong process of teaching good manners and appropriate, acceptable behavior to their puppies as soon as the puppy arrived in the home. I joined the APDT in 2000 and now share its vision:

“All dogs are effectively trained through dog-friendly techniques, and, therefore, are lifelong companions in a relationship based on mutual trust and respect.”

The Granberg Training Center is dedicated to teaching pet dog owners reward-based training techniques which will result in a well-mannered, canine citizen both in the home and in public.
